About the ISGAN Knowledge Hub
The ISGAN Knowledge Hub is a a newly developed resource created by ISGAN experts to provide guidance for various actors involved in energy system planning, with particular focus on distribution grid infrastructure. The Knowledge Hub is organized around five key phases of long-term planning, underpinned by three essential sets of framework conditions that must be met for an efficient and forward-looking planning process.
This Hub brings together a wealth of knowledge resources relevant for this context, accumulated by ISGAN experts over the years, now presented within a structured and cohesive framework for long-term planning and implementation of smart distribution grids.
Please note that the current site is a pilot version under development. As of now, it features tailored guidance for two generic types of actor groups: policy makers (at national, regional, and local levels, as well as regulatory bodies) and grid planners (encompassing both strategic and technical roles within utilities and distribution grid organizations).
About the ISGAN Lighthouse Project
The ISGAN Lighthouse Project on Distribution Grids is a strategic initiative launched in 2023, engaging all ISGAN Working Groups and the broader ISGAN Community. Building on the global COP28 Pledge to triple renewable capacity and significantly enhance energy efficiency, this project examines the vital roles that smart distribution grids play in achieving these ambitious yet crucial policy objectives.
A key outcome of the first phaseof this initiative (2024) is the ISGAN Knowledge Hub, the result of co-creation by a large number of smart grid experts from ISGAN countries. This resource is also informed by a global survey on forward-looking grid planning, with respondents from 21 countries, as well as insights gathered from five workshops involving key grid actors across five global regions.
The Knowledge Hub provides targeted guidance to various actor groups involved in the forward-looking, long-term planning and implementation of smart distribution grids.By fostering collaboration and addressing the unique challenges these stakeholders face, the Lighthouse Project aims to help align their efforts effectively, ultimately contributing to the successful realization of COP28 goals.
Work continues in a second phase (2025–2026) to further develop relevant knowledge and tools that can support key actors in navigating the complexities of long-term grid planning and implementation
About ISGAN
The International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) is an international platform for the development and exchange of knowledge and expertise on smarter, cleaner, and more flexible and resilient electricity grids (“Smart Grids”). ISGAN is a joint Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Initiative and IEA Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) established in 2011, which provides an important channel for the communication of experience, trends, lessons learned, and visions in support of global, national and regional clean energy objectives as well as new flexible and resilient solutions for smart grids.
